If your injuries require treatment of painful and tender areas, our osteopaths will aim to make you as comfortable as possible. Unfortunately, some conditions are painful and may be tender during movement, stretching or treatment.
There are techniques which may cause some short-term discomfort or pain.
You may experience mild soreness for a day or two after treatment, similar to that felt after moderate exercise. This usually resolves in a short time but if this soreness persists or increases significantly, please call your osteopath to discuss your concerns.
In some cases, and condition dependent or depending on certain concerns that may have been raised, your osteopath may require some further testing or referral to another healthcare practitioner.
Additional investigations such as X-rays, scans or blood tests may be needed in some cases. Your osteopath may even refer you to another health professional or to your GP.
The majority of condition do not need to be referred elsewhere and can be safely treated within the osteopathic scope.
There is no minimum age! You can take your baby to an osteopath from birth.
Birth is physically demanding for both mothers and their babies, an osteopathic visit during the first 6 weeks is a great way to spot any strains or restrictions.
This enables us to identify and treat any restrictions before they become an issue.
Some indications can be:
Some babies experience specific symptoms which require treatment.
A post-natal check from 6 weeks for mum is also highly recommended.
Some patients are eligible for a Medicare rebate through a program called The Chronic Disease Management (CDM) program. Speak to your GP to see if you are eligible for this program. Through the CDM program a patient is eligible for 5 treatments from an Allied Health specialist per calendar year, this includes an osteopath for which they get a partial rebate.
Osteopaths we can only process the Medicare treatments if all the paperwork from the GP is in order, otherwise it may be rejected by Medicare and no rebate will be given. As such, it is important to arrive at your appointment with your CDM referral and paperwork and to check that the information is correct, better yet give us a call to guide you through it.
Often you will be asked to remove some clothing so that your osteopath can examine you thoroughly. It’s important that you feel comfortable, but it's also important that your osteopath can see the affected and surrounding areas in order to do their job as thoroughly as possible.
Your Osteopath also needs to be able to move you about when they are treating and examining you. If you feel uncomfortable disrobing, then flexible clothing is preferable for example tight stretchy leggings or shorts. Most people feel comfortable enough to disrobe, your osteopath will try to preserve your modesty by covering you up as best as possible.
You can check with our clinic beforehand, if you are unsure.
If you would like to stay in your clothing that is ok too, but we may guide you as to which clothing types are best for your condition.
